if I upload a photo larger than 1,5 MB I get errors like Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate..etc

Full error string: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 39858177 bytes) in /home/ipzdomgl/public_html/components/com_simcontests/libraries/ImageHandler/Core/ImageWorkshopLib.php on line 128
If I switch php version (now works on 5.5) to a more advanced I get many other
errors.
